A "DINGDONG" is what I call a ropy piece of striped and stretchy knit fabric. This striped and stretchy fabric is from my days as a fine-gauge circular-knit designer in the early 2000s in Montréal, Québec.
DINGDONGs are cut from large pieces of striped and stretchy fabric that were used to confirm colourways and patterns. This fabric was never "finished" meaning it wasn't heat-set, meaning when the fabric was cut into strips the edges curled inwards to form a tight curl.
These DINGDONGs were all (regrettably) cut by hand, it was only after much repetitive stress, and strain did an electric rotary fabric cutter get introduced into the mix.
DINGDONGs are a combination of nylon, polyester, Lycra, spandex, and lurex. They can be washed and trimmed if the ends get frayed.

I've lived with these DINGDONGs for over 20 years now and they show up now and again, like here, here, and here.
